The New York Giants are bringing in former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy as their new offensive coordinator, according to reports from The Athletic. Nagy’s experience will be leveraged under the guidance of head coach John Harbaugh as he seeks to mold the team’s promising young quarterback, Jaxson Dart.
Nagy’s offseason was marked by an unexpected turn of events. After the Kansas City Chiefs effectively moved on from him as their offensive coordinator, he found himself seeking new opportunities, ultimately leading him to the Giants. His contract with the Chiefs expired following the season, and the team quickly hired Eric Bieniemy, the former Bears running backs coach, to take over the offensive coordinator role.
Nagy previously enjoyed a successful stint with the Chiefs, serving as quarterbacks coach from 2013 to 2015 and offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2017 under head coach Andy Reid. His subsequent coaching tenure with the Bears spanned from 2018 to 2021, during which he led the team to an NFC North title and a playoff berth in his debut year, earning Coach of the Year honors after transforming the Bears from a 5-11 record to 12-4.
However, Nagy faced challenges during his final years in Chicago. Despite the initial success, he struggled to develop quarterback Mitch Trubisky and encountered difficulties with the onboarding process of first-round draft pick Justin Fields. Over his last three seasons, Nagy’s Bears posted a disappointing 22-27 record, with the offensive unit ranking 21st or below in total offense each year.
This new chapter in Nagy’s career presents an opportunity for him to revitalize his coaching reputation, particularly as he takes on the task of maximizing Jaxson Dart’s potential. With Harbaugh’s leadership and Nagy’s experience, the Giants are hoping to turn the tides and enhance their offensive output in the upcoming season.
