The New York Giants are enhancing their coaching staff under head coach John Harbaugh, who is meeting expectations by attracting experienced assistants. Recently, it was confirmed that Greg Roman will be joining the Giants, further solidifying a team focused on offensive growth.
Although Roman interviewed for the offensive coordinator position that ultimately went to Matt Nagy, his experience and previous collaboration with the Harbaugh family made his addition timely and beneficial. Roman, who has held the offensive coordinator role at four different NFL teams, brings a wealth of knowledge, particularly in the running game, which will be essential for the Giants moving forward.
Roman, 53, joins from the Los Angeles Chargers, where he most recently worked under Jim Harbaugh, who decided to part ways with Roman after a disappointing AFC Wild Card loss to the Patriots. Prior to that, Roman served as John Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens from 2018 to 2022, where he developed a signature running game that leveraged the talents of rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson.
This isn’t the first partnership for the Harbaugh brothers and Roman; their shared history dates back to 2009 and 2010, when he was the associate head coach while Jim Harbaugh led Stanford. Additionally, Roman garnered recognition for orchestrating the San Francisco 49ers’ offense from 2011 to 2014, a period that included a Super Bowl appearance against John Harbaugh’s Ravens in Super Bowl 47.
Looking ahead, Roman will collaborate with Nagy to revitalize a Giants offense helmed by quarterback Jaxson Dart, who enters his second NFL season. This strategic move signifies a promising direction for the Giants as they aim to enhance their offensive output and overall performance in the coming season. With John Harbaugh at the helm and a support team rich in experience, the foundation for success is being laid for the Giants.
