The Giants’ manager Bob Melvin has announced that third baseman Matt Chapman is expected to be activated off the Injured List for the upcoming game against the Athletics on Saturday. Chapman, a celebrated five-time Gold Glove Award recipient, has been sidelined since June 9 due to inflammation in his right hand. Before his injury, he posted a .243 batting average, along with 12 home runs and 30 RBIs.
The absence of Chapman has been felt by the Giants, who have struggled without his reliable defense and hitting. However, during the recent victory over the Diamondbacks, Brett Wisely showcased an impressive defensive play reminiscent of Chapman’s usual performance, providing a glimpse of the depth within the team’s roster.
Melvin indicated that Chapman has been actively participating in live batting practice and using a high-velocity pitching machine to prepare for his return. Despite his eagerness to join the team immediately, he is spending time with the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate, the River Cats, to gain some game experience prior to returning to the major leagues.
Melvin explained the coaching staff’s decision: “Obviously, he wanted to get back right away but it’s been a month. We want to get him on the field, get some at-bats and see how he feels the next day.” The anticipation is that Chapman will be ready to contribute as soon as this weekend, which will significantly bolster the team’s chances moving forward.
This return could mark a pivotal moment for the Giants as they look to strengthen their lineup and enhance their playoff aspirations. Fans are encouraged to keep up-to-date with the team’s progress through platforms like the Giants Talk Podcast.
