Giants Fire Bob Melvin, Launch Manager Search After Playoff Drought

The San Francisco Giants have announced the dismissal of their manager, Bob Melvin, despite him having one year remaining on his contract. This decision comes after another season without playoff success, marking the fourth consecutive year—and eighth in the past nine—that the Giants have missed postseason contention. Despite a promising season at various points, the Giants ended with an 81-81 record in 2025 under Melvin’s guidance.

Melvin, a local hero from Menlo Park who played for the Giants from 1986-88, was seen as an ideal fit when hired in October 2023. With an impressive resume as a three-time Manager of the Year, he joined the Giants aiming to revive the team’s fortunes after replacing Gabe Kapler. Under his leadership, the Giants made strategic signings, including third baseman Matt Chapman and pitcher Blake Snell, and in one of their moves this season, acquired Rafael Devers from the Red Sox to boost their lineup.

Despite these efforts, inconsistency and struggles on the field plagued the Giants. A strong performance mid-season positioned them for a potential playoff run, but a disappointing finish saw them drop crucial games. Their pitching depth waned due to injuries and trades, and while their bullpen started strong, it faltered in the latter half of the season.

Giants’ new president of baseball operations, Buster Posey, expressed disappointment in the team’s performance and his decision to part ways with Melvin, emphasizing the need for a change in leadership to meet the team’s standards. Possible candidates for the manager position include Skip Schumaker, Craig Albernaz, Nick Hundley, and Mark Hallberg.

Despite the season’s setbacks, there is optimism as the Giants search for new leadership. The team looks to build upon its strengths and address areas of improvement to break its playoff drought and return to contention.
