The arrival of great white sharks in New England waters has been confirmed with the sighting of an unusually large specimen named “Contender.” Measuring an impressive 13 feet 9 inches and weighing over 1,650 pounds, Contender is believed to be the largest white shark tagged in the Atlantic Ocean, as reported by the nonprofit ocean research organization Ocearch.

Recently pinged about 50 miles east of Nantucket, Contender’s appearance reflects a familiar seasonal pattern. Much like New England residents who escape to warmer climates during the winter, these majestic sharks migrate south to warmer waters such as those off the Georgia and Florida coasts and return to the northern Atlantic throughout the summer months.

Ocearch’s ongoing research has revealed that great white sharks display remarkable migratory behavior, with strong site fidelity that draws them back to the same locations year after year. This was highlighted in a 2022 study conducted by Ocearch and its partners, indicating that feeding, growing, and reproduction are likely the driving factors behind their predictable migrations.

As the summer approaches, scientists and shark enthusiasts alike can look forward to observing these magnificent predators as they return to New England’s waters, highlighting the importance of marine conservation efforts to protect such vital species and their habitats.
