A new sequel to PlayStation’s “Ghost of Tsushima” is on the horizon, developed by Sucker Punch Productions. The game, called “Ghost of Yōtei,” is scheduled for release in 2025 and will introduce players to a fresh protagonist named Atsu within a completely new storyline.
The original “Ghost of Tsushima,” which was released in 2020, follows the journey of Jin Sakai, a samurai tasked with defending Tsushima Island during the initial Mongol invasion of Japan. Players face the dilemma of adhering to the traditional samurai code or utilizing less honorable tactics to minimize the loss of life while battling the Mongol forces.
A multiplayer spin-off, “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends,” was released in October 2020 and later launched as a standalone product in September 2021.
In a recent PlayStation blog post, Sucker Punch Productions’ communications manager Andrew Goldfarb expressed the team’s desire to retain the essential elements established in the original game, such as embodying a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering players the freedom to explore at their own pace, and showcasing the stunning world. He emphasized their goal of creating a fresh experience while drawing from familiar themes, shifting focus from Jin Sakai’s narrative to the broader concept of the “Ghost.”
According to Sucker Punch, Atsu’s adventure occurs in 1603, over 300 years after the events of the original game, set against the backdrop of Mount Yōtei in Ezo, known today as Hokkaido, Japan. During this period, this region was not under Japanese control and was characterized by vast grasslands, snowy tundras, and various challenges. This setting diverges from the organized samurai clans of Tsushima and serves as a canvas for a unique tale waiting to be unveiled.
The announcement of the sequel took place during PlayStation’s State of Play presentation, where several game updates were shared, including a release date for “Lego Horizon Adventures” on November 14, Keanu Reeves’ role as Shadow in the upcoming “Sonic X Shadow Generations” movie pack releasing December 12, a forthcoming free expansion pack for “Astro Bot,” and a glimpse into EA’s “Dragon Age: The Veilguard.”
The State of Play event coincided with the recent reveal of PlayStation’s next console, the PS5 Pro, set to launch in November.
