As we approach the end of July, excitement builds for the arrival of August and its much-anticipated annual fair in Sussex County. This cherished event highlights the region’s natural beauty and the agricultural bounty that has sustained its residents for centuries.
The history of Sussex County is steeped in the legacy of the Lenni Lenape tribe, who thrived in the area for about 12,000 years, relying on hunting and farming. They cultivated crops such as corn, peaches, and plums. European settlers later adopted similar practices, with farmers expanding their operations to provide for their families and surrounding communities, producing dairy and meat.
Seasonal gatherings became commonplace, facilitating the exchange of ideas and fostering connections among neighbors. One significant gathering spot was the Farmer’s Picnic at Lake Grinnell, which attracted thousands, allowing residents to connect and enjoy community spirit.
As the 19th century progressed, railroads brought more visitors to Sussex County, making events like the Farmer’s Picnic more accessible. These early fairs evolved, including a horse racing fair in Newton that drew significant crowds and showcased prized horses—an essential part of transportation and farming during that time.
The Branchville Riding Club introduced a horse show in 1919, which grew into the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show, characterized by the “Queen of the Fair” competition. The fair later moved to its current location at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in 1976, where permanent structures now host not just the fair but various annual events.
Today, the fair is formally known as the New Jersey State Fair/Sussex County Farm and Horse Show, attracting over 220,000 visitors annually. Attendees can look forward to a diverse array of attractions, including livestock shows, art displays, carnival rides, and community contributions.
