2K Games has announced that “Borderlands 4,” the latest installment in the popular “Borderlands” series, is set to launch in 2025. The game was revealed during the gamescom video game convention and is now available for fans to add to their wishlists.
According to 2K’s description, players will assume the role of a legendary Vault Hunter on a quest for hidden alien treasures, facing various enemies along the way. This title will be the fourth main entry in the “Borderlands” franchise and the seventh game overall, which has seen impressive sales exceeding 87 million copies worldwide.
In March, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of 2K Games, announced plans to acquire Gearbox, the developer behind “Borderlands,” from the Embracer Group for $460 million. The acquisition, finalized in June, granted Take-Two the rights to several Gearbox intellectual properties, including “Borderlands,” “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands,” and “Duke Nukem.”
After the acquisition was announced, Gearbox hinted at having six significant projects in development, including sequels from the “Borderlands” and “Homeworld” franchises, along with at least one new intellectual property. The announcement of “Borderlands 4” marks the first confirmation of a project progressing from development.
Randy Pitchford, founder and president of Gearbox, expressed the team’s ambitions for “Borderlands 4,” emphasizing their desire to enhance everything fans love about the series while exploring new creative directions. Catharina Lavers Mallet, senior vice president and general manager at 2K, highlighted the significance of the “Borderlands” series to the company and their excitement about deepening their collaboration with Gearbox.
This announcement follows the recent disappointment of the “Borderlands” film, which starred Cate Blanchett and underperformed at the box office.
