Georgia Tech has made significant strides in the 2026 transfer portal cycle, adding former Alabama standout Jaylen Mbakwe to its roster. This announcement came on Monday, following Mbakwe’s weekend visit to the Atlanta campus, where he decided to commit to the Yellow Jackets and head coach Brent Key instead of pursuing other opportunities with SEC schools.
Mbakwe, a former 5-star recruit according to On3/Rivals, expressed that his choice was heavily influenced by his connection with Coach Key, who, like Mbakwe, hails from the Birmingham area. The familiarity and trust he has in Key’s coaching system played a vital role in his decision. “Pretty much coach Key…from the same area. Feels like I’ve known him for a long time. And he has that same system that I would have been in with Coach (Nick) Saban,” Mbakwe shared after his commitment. He emphasized his readiness to contribute to the team, stating, “Great guy to play under, and I’m ready to get to work.”
At Alabama, Mbakwe showcased his versatility, having experience as both a cornerback and wide receiver during his two-year tenure. Initially committing to Alabama as a 5-star wide receiver prospect from Clay-Chalkville High in Alabama, he had over 30 offers from major programs across the SEC, ACC, and Big Ten. During his first season at Alabama, he played in 12 games as a defensive back, recording 15 tackles, an interception, and other defensive contributions. Although he initially returned to Alabama after the speculation of entering the transfer portal, he transitioned to wide receiver in 2025, catching three passes and contributing on special teams.
When discussing his future at Georgia Tech, Mbakwe remained open regarding his position, stating, “I can reach my full potential anywhere in college football.” His commitment includes not only his skills on the field but also his understanding of what it takes to win. “I have a big opportunity to add to the success he’s bringing to Georgia Tech and I want to be a part of something like that,” he stated, acknowledging Coach Key’s ability to develop a winning program.
Mbakwe is the second player to commit to Georgia Tech from the transfer portal this cycle, following the addition of former Rutgers defensive end Jordan Walker. He conveyed his competitive spirit and determination to the Jackets’ fan base, declaring, “A winner, a competitor. I’m going to do whatever it is to get this team in a position to win.” Furthermore, he noted a connection with Georgia Tech’s cornerbacks coach Kobie Jones, who was an assistant at Alabama during his freshman year, reinforcing his ties to the team.
As the Yellow Jackets look to enhance their program, Mbakwe’s commitment signifies a step in a positive direction, with hopes that his skills and competitive nature will contribute to Georgia Tech’s future successes on the field.
