Georgia Congressman Proposes Controversial Name Change for Greenland

A Republican Congressman from Georgia has put forth a bill in the House of Representatives aimed at renaming Greenland to “Red, White, and Blueland.” This initiative, titled the “Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025,” was introduced by Rep. Earl “Buddy” Carter amid ongoing discussions surrounding former President Donald Trump’s aspiration to purchase the island.

Carter’s proposal would instruct the new Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to ensure that all official documentation and maps reflect the name change. In a press release, he expressed a bold vision: “America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland,” emphasizing that the acquisition of Greenland is a matter of national security. He noted that Trump has recognized this purchase as a priority and spoke of welcoming Greenland’s residents into what he described as the “freest nation to ever exist.”

Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland, however, has not received support from its current administration. Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede has made it abundantly clear that the island is not for sale. Despite this resistance, Trump’s rhetoric persists. He has raised legal questions about Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland, suggesting that Greenlanders would choose to join the United States if presented the opportunity. Moreover, Trump has made headlines by threatening to impose tariffs on Denmark should it refuse to entertain the sale.

Polarizing opinions regarding Trump’s interest are prevalent among Greenlanders. A recent poll found that 85% of respondents are opposed to the idea of becoming part of the U.S., with nearly half perceiving Trump’s overtures as a potential threat to their autonomy. Only a small fraction—merely 6%—expressed support for the transition to U.S. governance, with 9% remaining undecided. These sentiments reflect a cautious attitude towards Trump’s approach, with many prioritizing their territorial integrity over perceived opportunities.

In light of these developments, it remains to be seen how this bill will progress in Congress and whether it will influence the ongoing debate around Greenland’s status. The situation highlights broader themes of national security, territorial rights, and the complexities of international relations.

As conversations around the bill unfold, it is essential to favor diplomatic dialogue that respects Greenland’s self-determination and acknowledges the concerns of its residents.
