Georgetown Eyes NCAA Tournament Return in Ed Cooley’s Third Season

Ed Cooley steps into his third season as Georgetown’s head coach, eager to build on the progress made since taking over from Patrick Ewing. After doubling the Hoyas’ win total from his first to second year and guiding the team to its first winning season since 2018-19, Cooley is striving to lead Georgetown back to the NCAA Tournament, a feat last achieved in 2020-21 with an unexpected Big East tournament victory.

Key players returning for the Hoyas include junior point guard Malik Mack, who notably transferred from Harvard. Last season, Mack averaged 12.9 points and 4.3 assists per game, demonstrating his capability as a primary scorer, especially with a knack for explosive scoring bursts. Another significant addition is KJ Lewis, a junior guard from Arizona, who brings a well-rounded game featuring 10.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, and impressive performances during the Big 12 Tournament.

Vince Iwuchukwu is also an intriguing figure for the Hoyas. Standing at 7-1, the senior center transferred from St. John’s and, despite limited stats last season, possesses considerable potential as he previously ranked as a five-star recruit.

However, the team is also navigating notable departures, including Thomas Sorber and Micah Peavy, who both declared for the NBA draft, as well as Jayden Epps, who has transferred to Mississippi State. New faces like guard Langston Love, a transfer from Baylor with a strong shooting percentage of 38.8% from beyond the arc, will also play a crucial role.

Georgetown’s season kicks off with a home game against Morgan State, with several challenging matchups on the horizon, including games against Maryland, North Carolina, and UConn. The Hoyas last celebrated success in the NCAA Tournament back in 2015 and are eager to change that narrative as they aim for resurgence under Cooley’s leadership.

As the team gears up for the challenges ahead, fans are hopeful for a season marked by resilience and growth, looking to reinstate Georgetown’s legacy in college basketball.
