Former Long Island congressman George Santos is preparing to report to federal prison on Friday, where he will begin serving a sentence of more than seven years following his conviction on federal corruption charges. Santos, whose legal troubles arose from a series of fabrications during his congressional campaign, is required to surrender to the federal Bureau of Prisons by 2 p.m. on Friday.
Santos, who recently turned 37 and currently resides in Pennsylvania, has taken to social media to voice his frustrations with federal prosecutors and the public’s harsh judgment as he anticipates his incarceration. He acknowledged his legal missteps, stating, “I [expletive] up, that’s a fact,” and criticized what he claimed was a politically motivated sentence.
His legal advisors previously argued for a two-year sentence, contrasting with prosecutors’ request for 87 months for what they described as Santos’ “unrepentant” behavior. Santos pled guilty last August to aggravated identity theft and wire fraud, amid allegations of misconduct during his congressional run, including improperly receiving unemployment benefits, filing false financial disclosures, and unauthorized credit card charges against campaign donors.
Santos was a controversial figure in his brief term, initially elected in 2022 to represent New York’s 3rd Congressional District. His time in office was marked by revelations of his extensive lies regarding his educational background and professional experiences. He was expelled from Congress after a House Ethics Committee report concluded there was “overwhelming evidence” supporting his involvement in various criminal activities.
During his sentencing, U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert condemned Santos for his actions, labeling them as “flagrant thievery.” Following his conviction, Santos’ former campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, received three years of probation for her involvement in the fraudulent activities.
Despite this overwhelming legal fallout, Santos has pledged continued support for former President Donald Trump, asserting that his upcoming imprisonment will not change his political loyalties.
