George Clooney, along with his wife Amal Clooney and their two children, has officially been granted French citizenship, as confirmed by a recent government decree published in France’s official gazette. This move aligns with Clooney’s earlier statements expressing admiration for French privacy laws that provide a protective barrier for his family against the intrusive nature of paparazzi.
In a December interview with RTL radio, the actor shared his love for French culture and language, humorously noting his struggles despite dedicating 400 days to language courses. He highlighted the appeal of France’s stance on children’s privacy, stating, “Here, they don’t take photos of kids. There aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That’s number one for us.”
Clooney, now a dual citizen of the United States and France, has maintained deep ties to Europe for many years, even before his marriage in 2014 to Amal Clooney, a British-Lebanese human rights attorney fluent in French. Their European connections include an estate in Lake Como, Italy, purchased in 2002, a historic manor in England, and a picturesque former wine estate in southern France, known as the Domaine du Canadel, acquired in 2021.
While they also own properties in New York and Kentucky, the couple opted to sell their residences in Los Angeles and Mexico over the past decade. Despite their frequent travels, Clooney expressed that their home in France is where their family feels the happiest.
Clooney’s accolades extend beyond acting; he is a respected director and producer, having won two Academy Awards—one for best supporting actor in the 2006 film “Syriana” and another for his production work on “Argo” in 2012.
Interestingly, he is not alone among Hollywood figures in seeking French citizenship. Director Jim Jarmusch recently announced his intention to apply for French nationality, citing a desire for a refuge from the political climate in the United States and a fondness for French culture.
This dual citizenship not only highlights the Clooney family’s affection for France but also reflects a broader trend among celebrities who are increasingly drawn to the lifestyle and values offered by the country. It is a reminder that culture can provide solace and happiness to many, especially in today’s fast-paced world.
