A recent study has shed light on the sexual habits of different generations in the UK, revealing that on average, people are engaging in intimate activities about 57 times a year, which equates to just over once a week. This data, while intriguing, should be taken lightly as sexual frequency is subjective and varies greatly based on individual circumstances.
The study, conducted by British sex-positive retailer Lovehoney, sought to determine which generation is most sexually active. The results placed Generation Z at the bottom, prompting discussions around what is being termed an “intimacy crisis” among the youngest adults.
According to the study, Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, are engaging in sexual activities approximately 47 times annually. Generation X, roughly between the ages of 45 and 60, report about 62 intimate encounters per year. Millennials, aged 27 to 43, surpass other generations, averaging 73 instances of sexual activity each year.
Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2006, reports the lowest frequency, with only 36 occurrences annually. Several factors could contribute to this trend. A significant reason appears to be economic: home ownership amongst young adults is relatively low due to soaring property prices, with many still residing with their parents. Consequently, privacy for intimate moments is more challenging to come by, with many Gen Z individuals acknowledging the awkwardness of being sexually active under a parental roof.
Additionally, changes in lifestyle and priorities among Gen Z may play a part in this reduced frequency. Despite these challenges, experts suggest various methods to enhance sexual connection for those facing difficulties, such as communication, mindfulness, and maintaining a level of physical fitness. Engaging in meditation and exercise can help improve one’s mood and libido.
Overall, while the frequency of sexual activity may vary across generations, it is crucial to understand that each individual’s circumstances are unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to intimacy.
