In recent findings from a YouGov poll, it has been revealed that 20% of Generation Z, those aged between 18 to 29, believe that political violence is sometimes justifiable. This figure stands in contrast to other age groups, with 14% of Millennials (aged 30-49) agreeing, while only 8% of those aged 45-64 and a mere 3% of those over 65 share this view.

The survey, which sample 2,643 U.S. adults, took place on September 11, the day after the tragic shooting and killing of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. The incident has raised questions about the role of social media and its impact on political violence, with Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemning the incitement that platforms may instigate.

Political climate experts, such as Lucas Walsh from Monash University, attribute Gen Z’s heightened aggression in politics to the tumultuous world they have come of age in, marked by a climate crisis, economic pressures, and the divisive nature of social media platforms.

Alarmingly, political violence in the U.S. has seen an uptick over the past year, including two assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump during the 2024 Presidential Campaign. The first attempt occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania, while the second involved the shooting and death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

The aftermath of such events often ignites political finger-pointing. In the wake of Kirk’s assassination, the Trump administration, including Vice President JD Vance, was quick to blame left-wing extremism for the surge in violence. On the other hand, Democrats highlight data showing that the majority of extremist killings are committed by far-right individuals, urging an honest discussion about the true roots of violence.

As debates ensue about the political landscape, it is paramount that efforts focus on civil discourse and actions that can bridge divides to ensure a safer society for all. Recognizing the diverse viewpoints and underlying causes of generational perspectives on violence might foster a deeper understanding and, potentially, solutions that prioritize peace over conflict.
