Gavin Lux has officially made the move from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Cincinnati Reds as part of a trade deal. The transaction, confirmed by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, will see the Dodgers receiving a future draft pick along with outfield prospect Mike Sirota in exchange for Lux.
The Dodgers had been exploring trade options for Lux, who garnered interest from teams like the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees. With the recent signing of Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim to a three-year deal, along with Mookie Betts’ anticipated shift to the infield next season and a contract extension for Tommy Edman, the Dodgers found themselves with several infield options. This made Laurie’s departure seem inevitable.
During his time with the Dodgers, Lux posted a career-high .251 batting average, recording 10 home runs and 50 RBIs last season. He played his entire six-year MLB career with Los Angeles, contributing to two World Series victories. Though he missed the 2023 season due to a torn ACL, he was able to contribute in the postseason with a hit and an RBI in the Dodgers’ World Series win over the Yankees, marking the team’s eighth championship title. Lux is set to earn over $2.7 million next season and is expected to enter free agency after the 2026 season.
For the Reds, who had a disappointing 77-85 record last season and missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, this trade could serve as a pivotal moment. With new manager Terry Francona at the helm, Lux is likely to join star player Elly De La Cruz in the infield. Given that the Reds traded away second baseman Jonathan India this offseason, Lux appears poised to take over that position. Additionally, other players like Matt McClain may also compete for second base after sitting out last season due to a shoulder injury.
The combination of Lux and De La Cruz has the potential to invigorate the Reds’ infield and boost the team’s chances as they aim to break a five-year playoff drought. With new leadership and promising young talent, Cincinnati could be on the cusp of a resurgence in the coming seasons.
This development not only signals a fresh start for Lux in Cincinnati but also brings hope to Reds fans for a future playoff appearance and, perhaps, a postseason series victory for the first time since 1995.
