Gavaskar’s Surprising Praise for Rishabh Pant: A Game Changer?

Sunil Gavaskar has notably shifted his stance on Rishabh Pant following a strong performance by the Indian batter on the opening day of the first Test against England. Previously critical of Pant’s style, Gavaskar acknowledged the explosive player’s method during a discussion on Sony Sports. Once dismissive of Pant’s strategies, Gavaskar had described a reckless shot in Australia as “Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!”

Now, Gavaskar appreciates Pant’s aggression as part of a more calculated approach to batting. He said, “It seems like that’s how he plays. When he comes in to bat, on the second or third ball, he often uses his feet and hits a boundary.” This change demonstrates Pant’s evolution as he balances quick aggression with deliberate defense early in his innings. Gavaskar noted that by allowing himself time to settle, Pant is better prepared for unleashing powerful shots as the bowlers tire.

The performance has paid off for Pant, who scored an impressive 65 not out, contributing to India’s strong position of 359/3 at the end of Day 1, alongside Shubman Gill’s century and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s maiden Test ton. Gavaskar’s acknowledgement of Pant’s talent reflects a broader recognition of his capabilities, having previously witnessed him score remarkable centuries in South Africa and Australia.

This evolution in Gavaskar’s perspective showcases not only the growth of Rishabh Pant as a player but also the potential for positive momentum in the series against England.
