Coco Gauff continued her impressive unbeaten run in 2025, extending it to seven matches and 14 sets with a solid victory over Jodie Burrage from Britain at the Australian Open. The match, held at the iconic Rod Laver Arena, concluded with a score of 6-3, 7-5.
The 19-year-old Gauff, the reigning U.S. Open champion and last year’s semifinalist in Melbourne, faced some challenges during the second set. Despite initially leading 3-1, she stumbled, allowing Burrage to seize a 5-3 advantage. Gauff, however, displayed remarkable resilience by regaining control when Burrage served for the set. She launched a four-game surge, ultimately sealing the match after 1.5 hours.
“It was tough. She was serving really well, so I was just trying to manage that, honestly,” Gauff commented, acknowledging her opponent’s elevated performance during the match. While Gauff struggled with seven double-faults—six of which occurred in the second set—she stood out in terms of overall stability, committing only 11 groundstroke unforced errors compared to Burrage’s 37.
Both players encountered difficulties in their service games, with Burrage ending her last two services with double-faults. This inconsistency allowed Gauff to capitalize and secure the victory as she aims to fine-tune her serve and forehand, aspects she has been focusing on since late last year.
Gauff’s victory comes on the heels of her title run at the WTA Finals, where she recorded straight-set wins against top-ranked players like Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek. This streak has now reached an impressive 11 matches. Looking forward, Gauff is set to face Leylah Fernandez, who recently bounced back to defeat Cristina Bucsa.
Coco Gauff’s ability to adapt and overcome challenges on the court bodes well for her performance in the ongoing tournament, and her recent successes suggest she is poised to contend for additional titles.
