In Lekanai Village on Gau Island, a transformative wave of community development is underway, marked by the establishment of two innovative cooperatives aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting sustainable growth.
The Miramira ni Savura Lele Women’s Cooperative, formed by a dedicated group of 24 women, is expanding its focus beyond traditional mat weaving into layer chicken farming. This strategic pivot is supported by the government, reinforcing their commitment to diversifying income sources. Chairperson Tirisa Maibau expressed the cooperative’s ambitions, stating that their official registration has energized members to aim high, with plans to scale their poultry operation to around 200 birds. Their goal is to emerge as a leading supplier of eggs across Gau Island, demonstrating their drive for economic empowerment.
Complementing these efforts, the men of Lekanai have founded the Vatuvula Cooperative, which seeks to enhance accessibility to essential goods for villagers. Their primary initiative involves establishing a local village shop, which will provide a convenient source for everyday items and reduce residents’ reliance on trips outside the community.
