Paramount+ is embracing the enduring appeal of the beloved cartoon character Garfield by greenlighting a new animated series. Following the release of 2021’s Garfield Originals and the upcoming 2024 theatrical venture, The Garfield Movie, this fresh series promises to captivate fans of all ages. The role of Garfield will be brought to life by Lamorne Morris, known for his performances in Saturday Night Live and Fargo.

This untitled project will be helmed by Nickelodeon Animation Studios, with Dave H. Johnson and John Trabbic III serving as executive producers. Both producers have experience in bringing children’s content to life, having previously co-executive produced Nickelodeon’s Middlemost Post.

The announcement of the new series comes almost six years after Viacom, Paramount’s parent company at the time, acquired the rights to Garfield’s owner, Paws Inc. in 2019. This acquisition opened the door for Nickelodeon to create animated content featuring the iconic lasagna-loving cat, as well as offering opportunities for related consumer products and experiences.

The new series aims to enhance Paramount+’s lineup of children’s programming, which currently includes popular shows like SpongeBob SquarePants and PAW Patrol. In addition, the streaming platform has recently greenlit more kids-focused content, such as The Elephant & Piggie Show! and The Pigeon Show! starring the Pigeon.

While 2024’s The Garfield Movie received mixed reviews, generating $257 million worldwide, it has been confirmed that there will be a sequel, with Chris Pratt reprising his role as the voice of Garfield. With this new series in development, Paramount+ continues to invest in familiar characters and franchises, aiming to capture the attention of younger audiences while also appealing to nostalgic fans of Garfield.

As fans look forward to more adventures with Garfield, it’s evident that Paramount+ is committed to expanding its offerings in children’s entertainment, ensuring that the charm of this classic character endures for generations to come.
