Gamescom 2023: What Surprises Are in Store for Gamers?

Gamescom, the largest video game event in Europe, is approaching rapidly. From August 20 to 24, Cologne, Germany will welcome gamers, studios, industry professionals, and journalists to discover upcoming titles.

While E3 dominated the gaming landscape in the U.S. for many years, it has never been able to surpass Gamescom, which has consistently been one of the premier gaming showcases worldwide—especially in light of E3’s cancellation. Following June’s Summer Game Fest, Gamescom stands as one of the final opportunities this year to preview major releases slated for late 2024 and into 2025.

Last year, Gamescom attracted 320,000 attendees to its venue in Cologne, with a significant portion being public gamers eager to explore new titles presented by developers, ranging from solo indie teams to large-scale publishers.

CNET will be covering the event to showcase numerous new games, while fans can also catch early glimpses via presentations such as Opening Night Live. This trailer showcase is hosted by Geoff Keighley, a prominent figure in the gaming industry, and is set to reveal several anticipated games including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Dune: Awakening, among others.

Opening Night Live takes place on August 20 and acts as the kickoff for Gamescom, which continues from August 21 to 24. The event will commence at 11 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CEST, live from the Koelnmesse convention center. A preshow will begin 30 minutes prior to the main event.

Fans can view Opening Night Live on Gamescom’s website, with additional streams available on YouTube and Geoff Keighley’s Twitch channel for The Game Awards. For those unable to watch, a liveblog will provide updates on new trailers as they are unveiled.

Some confirmed titles expected to be showcased during the two-hour event include:

– Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
– Monster Hunter Wilds
– Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
– Little Nightmares 3
– Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero
– Batman: Arkham Shadow
– Dune Awakening
– Marvel Rivals
– Squid Game: Unleashed
– A new game from Tarsier Studios
– Sid Meier’s Civilization 7
– Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
– Lost Records: Bloom & Rage
– Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred

Given the duration of the event, numerous additional titles are likely to be featured, as studios have hinted at new announcements for the showcase.
