The nominations for the 2024 Game Awards, celebrating outstanding achievements in narrative-driven gaming, were unveiled on Monday. Leading the nominations is the beloved Japanese RPG series, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which received a remarkable seven nominations. This follows the game’s successful launch in February and the confirmation by producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi during the G-CON 2024 convention in South Korea that the third installment of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy is in active development.

Other strong contenders include LocalThunk’s Balatro, Game Science’s Black Myth: Wukong, and Team Asobi’s family-friendly platformer Astro Bot, all of which garnered seven nominations, including categories like Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Game of the Year. Sony Interactive Entertainment leads as the most nominated publisher this year with 16 nominations, followed closely by Square Enix and Xbox, each with 12. This year marks the 10th anniversary of The Game Awards, which continues to grow in popularity. The event saw a record 118 million live streams in 2023, showcasing a 15% increase from the previous year, solidifying its position in the gaming community as a major celebration.

Founder and host Geoff Keighley expressed gratitude for the growth of the event, reflecting on a decade of innovation in streaming awards shows.
