A significant forest fire has erupted in Cañiza, Pontevedra, marked by five ignition points along a road, resulting in rapid spread due to the area’s dry conditions and strong winds. The situation has forced local authorities to issue confinement orders for seven urban centers, citing the dangers of smoke and ash affecting residents.
The fire has already claimed approximately 200 hectares, making it the most severe wildfire recorded in Galicia this summer. In response, the Xunta has activated an ES-Alert system, warning residents and instructing them to remain indoors. This system, utilized for the first time this summer, sends audible alerts and vibration messages to mobile phones, ensuring that residents are kept informed during emergencies.
The blaze, which began at 4:23 PM on Wednesday in the parish of O Couto, prompted the Xunta to declare a level 2 emergency, given its proximity to populated areas, particularly around Nogueiró. As authorities work to manage the situation, environmental officer Carlos Sanmiguel emphasized the urgent concern surrounding the fire’s head, where the conflict is most intense. While control efforts have been effective on the flanks, the fire’s head remains a challenge.
A substantial firefighting effort has been mobilized, involving eleven agents, 19 brigades, and several aircraft, including five planes and eight helicopters. The Xunta has also called for assistance from the military emergency unit to enhance firefighting capabilities.
Despite the serious conditions, there is hope that firefighting teams will manage to contain the fire soon. Local leaders, including the mayor of Cañiza, Luis Piña, remain optimistic about advancements in controlling the situation overnight. As the community unites in response, cooperation and adherence to safety instructions are crucial for the well-being of all residents in the affected areas.
