Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz has been facing ongoing scrutiny as the GOP-controlled ethics committee continues its investigation into him. The inquiry is related to allegations that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and drug use, accepted improper gifts, and attempted to obstruct investigations concerning his conduct. This follows a 2021 Justice Department probe into whether he had sexual relations with a minor.
Recent developments have added to the controversy. Court documents filed recently include affidavits from three eyewitnesses who allege that Gaetz attended a drug-fueled party in 2017 with a 17-year-old girl who is central to the sex trafficking allegations against him. According to the filings, the minor arrived at a party hosted by lobbyist Chris Dorworth, where she reportedly participated in sexual activities, and illegal substances were prevalent.
Dorworth denied ever meeting the 17-year-old and stated that she is lying about Gaetz. The ethics investigation into Gaetz initially began under former Speaker Nancy Pelosi but was paused during the Justice Department’s inquiry. Gaetz has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and prosecutors did not pursue charges against him earlier this year. The ethics probe resumed after the decision not to charge him, and it has been reported that former Gaetz ally Joel Greenberg is now cooperating with the investigation.
Gaetz’s office has yet to comment on the latest allegations, and he has not publicly addressed the new revelations.
