Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve and a notable figure in the gaming industry, has made headlines recently not only for his influence in gaming but also for the launch of his newly acquired superyacht, the Leviathan. Delivered by Oceanco, a prestigious yacht manufacturer, the vessel represents a significant investment, having been personally designed by Newell, who states his deep respect for the sea.
The Leviathan spans a remarkable 111 meters in length, ranking as the 50th largest yacht globally. Oceanco CEO Marcel Onkenhout has praised the vessel, calling it “the most comfortable yacht ever designed” by the company, and it showcases a range of innovative features. This impressive yacht is outfitted with a staggering 280 miles of cables, which cater to myriad functionalities including an onboard hospital complete with a live-in nurse, advanced air conditioning, satellite communications, expansive garages for small boats and submarines, and extensive entertainment networks.
In addition to these high-end amenities, Leviathan boasts two gyms, an expansive 250 square meter beach club with a spa and bar, and diving platforms. Newell has also ensured that the yacht is a haven for gaming enthusiasts, featuring a room dedicated to 15 top-of-the-line gaming PCs, setting the stage for unforgettable LAN parties at sea.
Newell expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration process, highlighting the creativity, professionalism, and adaptability of the Oceanco team. “We knew we were asking for unusual things, and Oceanco embraced it with open arms,” he noted. The design process led to innovative choices that pushed boundaries, ensuring that every aspect of the yacht was tailored to unique specifications.
Beyond luxury, the Leviathan is also designed with scientific endeavors in mind. Newell’s interests extend to ventures like Starfish Neuroscience, focused on neural interfaces, and Inkfish, which centers on marine research. Its layout promotes collaboration, reflecting Newell’s history of fostering innovative environments at Valve.
Materials chosen for the yacht prioritize low maintenance and efficiency, substituting traditional materials with durable composites. The diesel-electric power system is combined with a battery storage solution, promoting eco-friendly operation for extended periods, alongside advanced wastewater treatment capabilities.
Charlie Birkett, CEO of Y.CO, remarked on the exceptional design of the Leviathan, calling it a “working ecosystem” that balances high-class hospitality with scientific research. The creation of the vessel involved over 2,000 skilled individuals, whose dedication is commemorated with their names etched on a glass panel in the main staircase.
As Newell continues to manage a fleet of luxury vessels, including the Draak and Rocinante, the Leviathan stands out as a centerpiece of his collection. Despite his retirement, Newell remains actively engaged in ambitious projects, shaping a daily routine that wonderfully blends work and leisure with activities such as scuba diving. The Leviathan marks an exciting new chapter for Newell, blending his passions for gaming, innovation, and the ocean in one extraordinary package.
