Gabby Thomas has completed her redemption tour by clinching gold in the women’s 200-meter final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The two-time Olympian recorded a remarkable time of 21.83 seconds, improving upon her bronze medal performance in the same event at the Tokyo Olympics.
In an impressive display of speed, Thomas dominated the final stretch of the race at the Stade de France, overtaking Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred to secure her top position on the podium.
Thomas, a resident of the Austin area, received her master’s degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Austin in May 2023. She previously earned her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, making history as the Ivy League’s first NCAA sprint national champion in the indoor 200-meter race during the 2017-18 season.
This victory marks Thomas’s third overall Olympic medal and her second individual accolade. In addition to her bronze in Tokyo’s 200-meter final, she was a member of the U.S. women’s 4×100 relay team that won a silver medal. According to reports, she is expected to compete in the relay event later this week in Paris.
The U.S. team also saw success in the event on Tuesday, with Thomas’ teammate, Brittany Brown, narrowly claiming the bronze medal, finishing just 0.02 seconds ahead of Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith. Julien Alfred took home the silver medal with a finish of 22.09 seconds.
