FX has officially greenlit a new drama series based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel “The Shards,” with Ryan Murphy serving as the executive producer. This project, which has been in the works since May, will feature Kaia Gerber in a leading role alongside a cast that includes Igby Rigney, Homer Gere, and Graham Campbell.
Originally presented as a serialized audiobook during 2020-21, “The Shards” saw its print version released in early 2023. A previous attempt to adapt the novel for HBO ultimately did not progress, paving the way for Murphy’s involvement. Discussions between him and Ellis to develop the show occurred earlier this year, leading to the current collaboration under the banner of Ryan Murphy Television, a part of 20th TV, the production entity responsible for the FX series.
Set against the backdrop of the early 1980s, the story contains autobiographical elements from Ellis’ own life and follows Bret (played by Rigney), a student at an elite Los Angeles prep school. His experience dramatically shifts with the arrival of a new student, Robert Mallory (Gere), tying into the unsettling backdrop of a serial killer’s activities. Graham Campbell will take on the role of Thom Wright, a close friend of Bret.
While the series has been approved for production, details regarding a writer have yet to be finalized. Alongside Murphy and Ellis, the executive production team includes Max Winkler, who is also slated to direct, as well as Nick Hall, Kathleen McCaffrey, and Brian Young.
This adaptation of “The Shards” has generated excitement for its potential to explore darker themes within a unique setting, and Ryan Murphy’s track record in producing engaging, high-quality dramas gives hope for a compelling viewing experience. The combination of a talented cast and a thought-provoking narrative signals a promising addition to FX’s diverse lineup.
