FX Announces Far Cry Anthology Series From Hawley and McElhenney

FX has officially announced a series order for “Far Cry,” adapting the immensely popular video game franchise into a limited anthology series. This exciting project comes from the creative minds of Noah Hawley, known for his work on “Fargo” and “Alien: Earth,” along with Rob McElhenney, the co-creator of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” who will also play a starring role. The series is set to stream on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ in other parts of the world.

Each season of “Far Cry” will maintain the franchise’s signature standalone storytelling style, featuring new characters and settings each time. Hawley expressed his enthusiasm for this format, likening it to the thematic variations seen in “Fargo.” “To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true,” he stated. He noted that he and McElhenney share a similar irreverent and ambitious outlook, which they aim to bring to life on screen.

McElhenney, who also produces the Emmy-winning series “Welcome To Wrexham,” is developing this venture through his More Better Productions, while Hawley will produce through his 26 Keys production company. Hawley recently secured a new overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television, underscoring the partnership’s solid foundation. His previous project “Alien: Earth” has also been well-received, achieving a remarkable 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and securing a second season.

Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, praised the collaboration, highlighting the successful history between FX and both McElhenney and Hawley, who have collectively produced six series and 32 seasons of television. He expressed optimism that the duo would deliver an original and captivating narrative for “Far Cry.” The partnership with Ubisoft, the game’s creator, is seen as pivotal in ensuring the series remains true to the beloved franchise.

McElhenney shared his excitement about working with Hawley, stating that teaming up with him represents a dream come true. He also acknowledged Ubisoft’s generosity in entrusting them with the iconic video game universe, which has captivated over 100 million players since its launch in 2004. The franchise is celebrated for its thrilling first-person action, expansive open-world environments, and engaging storylines featuring memorable villains, such as Antón, played by Giancarlo Esposito in “Far Cry 6,” released on October 6, 2021.

The executive production team for FX’s “Far Cry” includes McElhenney, Hawley, Emilia Serrano from 26 Keys, Nick Frenkel from 3 Arts, Jackie Cohn from More Better Productions, John Campisi, and representatives from Ubisoft Film & Television. The series promises to be a thrilling addition to FX Productions’ lineup.
