FWCC Partners to Launch Fiji National Chess Championship at USP

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) has partnered with the Fiji Chess Federation to kick off the highly anticipated Fiji National Chess Championship, which began today at the University of the South Pacific (USP) in Suva. This event, recognized as the official National Standard Chess Championship, spans five days and features nine rounds of competitive play under the Swiss System format.

Competitors will engage in two rounds each day for the first four days, leading up to the final round and the award presentations at the tournament’s conclusion. Participants will have the chance to compete for attractive cash prizes, prestigious trophies, and the distinguished title of National Champion, spotlighting the best chess talent in Fiji.

Hilda Kunau, the president of the Fiji Chess Federation, expressed immense gratitude toward the FWCC for their vital financial backing, underscoring the significant role of this championship. “This is the biggest tournament of the year, the National Standard Chess Championship. It brings together the best players in Fiji for five days of intense competition, and we are deeply grateful for our partnership with the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre,” she noted.

Situated in Room 019-10A & B at USP’s Laucala Campus, daily matches will commence at 8 AM, ensuring a thrilling atmosphere for both players and spectators alike.

This championship builds upon the momentum established by previous chess tournaments in Fiji, which have significantly heightened local interest in the game. For instance, the September Rapid Tournament hosted at USP attracted a diverse range of players, showcasing the flourishing chess community in the nation. The burgeoning participation in these tournaments signals a promising future for chess in Fiji, opening up increased avenues for players of all ages.

Through initiatives such as the National Chess Championship, there lies a hopeful outlook for the promotion and development of chess in Fiji, encouraging a passion for the game and nurturing the skills of budding players. As excitement swells among chess aficionados, this event not only serves as a competitive arena but also celebrates the positive influence chess has within communities throughout the country.
