Funky Fight: MMA Icon Ben Askren Faces Critical Health Battle

Ben Askren, the former MMA champion and wrestling pioneer, has been transferred from Nevada to Wisconsin for medical treatment as he battles pneumonia and a staph infection. According to Chael Sonnen, a fellow MMA athlete, Askren, affectionately known as “Funky,” is in critical condition and requires a lung transplant.

Askren’s wife, Amy, confirmed that he is currently unable to respond, and the family is asking for prayers during this challenging time. Sonnen emphasized the family’s priority was to bring Askren back to Wisconsin, where they hoped to be together should the situation become dire. He reported that there is a concerning hole in Askren’s lung, though the cause remains unexplained.

Known for his unique wrestling style that revolutionized the sport, Askren was a two-time NCAA champion and represented the United States in the 2008 Olympics. He transitioned to MMA after competing at the senior level, quickly rising to fame by winning titles in both Bellator and ONE FC without experiencing a loss during his time with those organizations.

Despite retiring and later undergoing hip surgery, Askren continued to influence the world of wrestling by coaching at his Askren Wrestling Academy in Wisconsin. He has trained national champions, including Keegan O’Toole and Mitchell Mesenbrink. Recently, he also signed with Real American Freestyle, a pro league established by Hulk Hogan, showcasing his continued commitment to the sport.

This situation is undoubtedly difficult for Askren’s family, friends, and fans. However, the outpouring of support through prayers and positive thoughts illustrates the deep impact he has had on the wrestling and MMA communities. His journey reflects resilience and dedication, and many are hopeful he can overcome these health challenges.
