A fundraiser supporting Patrick McClintock, a 20-year-old former Mississippi State University student charged after reportedly shouting an antisemitic slur at Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, has successfully raised over $36,000. The incident took place outside a pizza restaurant in Starkville on November 7, when McClintock allegedly yelled “F— the Jews” as Portnoy was filming a segment for his “One Bite” Pizza review.
According to a statement from the Starkville Police Department, they initiated an investigation after a video of the event went viral, showing McClintock hurling offensive remarks and tossing coins towards Portnoy. Following this, McClintock was charged with misdemeanor disturbing the peace and processed by the police, who released him the same day.
The Starkville Police emphasized the importance of safety and respect within the community, noting that while offensive language is constitutionally protected, disruptive behavior that threatens public safety will be addressed accordingly.
The crowdfunding campaign titled “DEFEND PATRICK MCCLINTOCK” has garnered significant support, with contributions totaling $36,245 as of Thursday afternoon. The campaign portrays McClintock as a victim of unjust treatment, emphasizing his actions as merely “mean words.”
In the altercation captured on video, Portnoy, who is Jewish, confronted McClintock after the latter’s comments, resulting in a heated exchange. Following the incident, Mississippi State University confirmed that McClintock had withdrawn from his studies.
The situation has sparked discussions about free speech and community standards, reflecting the ongoing challenges faced in addressing hate speech while balancing individual rights. As communities continue to navigate such complex issues, the hope remains for greater understanding and respect among individuals, regardless of differing beliefs.
