Businesses and vessel operators have been strongly advised to exercise heightened caution when dealing with fuel, oil, and other hazardous substances near waterways and the marine environment. This advisory follows the sighting of a fuel slick near the beacon opposite China Club in Suva.
In response to the incident, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change conducted a joint inspection of the affected area last week. Collaborating with the Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd, ministry officials performed onsite boat inspections accompanied by drone surveillance to assess the situation and identify the source of the fuel slick.
The Ministry has committed to ongoing investigations and monitoring efforts to detect any further signs of pollution. Specifically, interagency cooperation is underway between the Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) to trace the origin of the slick.
As the nation approaches the holiday season, the Ministry will treat all pollution reports with urgency, ensuring that timely investigations and appropriate response measures are undertaken. The government remains devoted to safeguarding Fiji’s marine environment and encourages the public to report any suspected pollution incidents immediately.
This proactive approach highlights the government’s commitment to environmental protection and public safety, especially during a time when increased maritime activity is expected. By fostering public awareness and collaboration among various agencies, Fiji can work towards a cleaner and safer marine ecosystem.
