The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is on the lookout for a new chief executive officer (CEO), with the job advertisement launched on various platforms recently. This development was confirmed by FRU Board chairman John Sanday. Koli Sewabu has been serving as the acting CEO since his appointment in May, with his interim role set to conclude this month.
During this recruitment phase, Sewabu has expressed his interest in officially applying for the CEO position. Sanday affirmed that while Sewabu may seek the permanent role, he will continue his functions as acting CEO until the hiring process is finalized. Sewabu is currently collaborating with his team and the Board Sub Committee to complete a strategic plan intended for the upcoming four years.
In addition to the CEO position, the FRU is also filling other important roles, including chief financial officer, human resources manager, and risk compliance officer, aiming to strengthen the organization ahead of what is anticipated to be a significant 2026 season.
This initiative reflects a strategic transformation aimed at equipping the FRU with essential skills and capabilities, enhancing its profile as a recognized rugby body both nationally and globally. Sanday emphasized the need for high performance as Fiji strives to establish itself as a tier-one rugby nation. The next decade is seen as crucial for Fiji rugby, which aims to seize commercial opportunities emerging in the international rugby market.
Sanday noted that Fiji Rugby possesses a strong and iconic brand. Efforts are being made to maximize its commercial potential while ensuring that the organization is structured to meet future challenges. The hiring process is being managed by the local company Maxumise, which adds a layer of professionalism to the search for new leadership.
The pursuit of transformative leadership within the FRU heralds a promising future for Fiji rugby, as it aligns with ongoing efforts to develop talent and embrace strategic opportunities. This new chapter aims to foster a vibrant rugby culture, ensuring that the sport not only survives but thrives on both the local and international stages.
