The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has made headlines with its firm stance on not allowing former national player Amenoni Nasilasila to participate in the finals of Fiji’s premier domestic rugby competition. Emphasizing player welfare and tournament integrity, the FRU highlighted the importance of adhering to its established policies.
In an official statement, the FRU reiterated its commitment to the Yellow Ribbon Program, which focuses on supporting the rehabilitation of ex-inmates through sports, but clarified that the decision regarding Nasilasila was rooted in strict regulatory adherence and athlete safety.
The Union provided two key reasons for this decision: a breach of the Tournament Terms of Participation (TOP) and serious concerns surrounding player welfare. According to the FRU, Nasilasila’s current situation was inconsistent with the tournament’s rules. A representative from the Union remarked, “We cannot compromise our own rules for one player, as doing so would jeopardize the integrity of the competition and set a troubling precedent.”
Furthermore, the FRU expressed concerns about public safety, asserting that allowing Nasilasila to compete in a crucial final without proper training in collision techniques posed substantial risks of serious injury. The statement emphasized that participation in a high-intensity match requires adequate preparation, regardless of a player’s fitness level. “Even if the player is physically fit, entering a high-intensity match without proper preparation poses a major risk,” the FRU cautioned.
Importantly, the FRU reassured stakeholders that this decision should not be interpreted as a dismissal of Nasilasila. Rather, it is seen as a structured and safe pathway for his eventual return to competitive rugby.
