The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has recently addressed its decision not to allow former national player Amenoni Nasilasila to participate in the finals of Fiji’s premier domestic rugby competition. In a statement issued, the FRU underscored its ongoing support for the Yellow Ribbon Program, which aids the rehabilitation and reintegration of former inmates into society through sports. The Union pointed out that Nasilasila’s circumstances directly contradicted the tournament’s stipulations. “We cannot compromise our own rules for one player, as doing so would jeopardize the integrity of the competition and set a troubling precedent,” said a representative of the FRU.
Moreover, the organization expressed apprehension about public safety, noting that permitting Nasilasila to compete in a high-stakes final without adequate training in collision techniques could lead to serious injury. “Even if the player is physically fit, entering a high-intensity match without proper preparation poses a major risk,” the statement indicated. The FRU advocated that their responsibility for player safety is unyielding, asserting that facilitating his participation at this stage is not in his best interest or that of the sport.
