Maxwell Alejandro Frost, the Democratic representative for Florida’s 10th District and the first Generation Z member of Congress, delivered a speech at the Democratic National Convention, emphasizing the urgent issue of climate change. While endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris just hours before she was set to speak, Frost highlighted the devastating effects of climate change on Florida, including flooding, extreme heat, and challenges faced by workers.
Frost warned the audience, “I’m here to tell you that the climate crisis isn’t some far-off threat; it is here.” He expressed optimism that with Harris and Governor Tim Walz’s leadership, significant progress can be achieved in addressing these critical issues. He also declared that “Fighting the climate crisis is patriotic!”
The Democratic National Convention is currently being held in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to formally accept the party’s nomination for the 2024 election on the convention’s final evening.
Maxwell Frost, who took office in 2023 and previously served as the national organizing director for the gun control advocacy group March for Our Lives, has been a strong proponent of gun protection legislation and tenant rights in Congress. At just 27 years old, he represents a vital segment of the young voting demographic that both political parties are keen to engage. Frost is advocating for climate protections, underscoring that the impacts of climate change are visible across his state.
He stated, “Kamala Harris and Joe Biden have proven that tackling this crisis creates jobs, that investing in clean energy protects our health, and that investing in mass public transit builds strong communities.”
The Democratic National Convention is taking place from August 19-22 in Chicago, Illinois. The event is hosted at the United Center, a venue familiar with Democratic conventions, having previously hosted the event 11 times, most recently in 1996.
The convention is being broadcast live on its website and will also be streamed on YouTube by USA TODAY, providing viewers with coverage throughout each night of the event. The overarching theme of this year’s convention is “For the People, For Our Future,” with specific themes assigned to each night.
