From Zeeland to All Blacks: Holland’s Dream Debut

New Zealand rugby coach Scott Robertson has lauded the inspiring journey of Fabian Holland, a Dutch-born lock set to make his All Blacks debut against France this Saturday. At just 22 years old, Holland is one of four uncapped players named in the starting lineup for this historic test match in Dunedin.

Holland’s passion for rugby ignited at the young age of 11 when he watched the All Blacks sevens team train in his hometown of Castricum, Netherlands. Driven by a dream to play professional rugby, he relocated to New Zealand five years later. Robertson described Hollands’s journey as “movie stuff,” recognizing the determination and sacrifices he made to chase his aspirations.

“From Zeeland to New Zealand,” Robertson remarked, highlighting Holland’s impressive transition. “He’s come a long way. It’s a great story,” he added, reflecting on Holland’s unwavering desire to represent New Zealand, a country he saw as the epitome of rugby excellence.

Holland shared his excitement about the opportunity, recalling how his affinity for the sport grew when he first started playing at the age of five at the Castricum Rugby Club. He remembered meeting All Blacks sevens captain DJ Forbes and Akira Ioane during their training sessions, which intensified his passion for rugby. “I always dreamed of coming, but it never felt real for me,” Holland described.

After initially arriving in New Zealand for a brief six-month stint at Christchurch Boys’ High School, Holland’s talent quickly gained recognition. He signed a developmental contract with the Highlanders in 2021 and then a full professional contract the following year.

Holland’s debut at Forsyth Barr Stadium, the home ground of the Highlanders, adds a special touch to the occasion. He will be accompanied by his former Otago and Highlanders teammate Christian Lio-Willie, who is also set to make his All Blacks debut. Robertson expressed confidence that fans from both Holland’s and Lio-Willie’s backgrounds would come out in full support.

Holland’s journey not only exemplifies personal determination and ambition but also serves as a reminder of the power of dreams in sports. As he takes to the field for his debut, it will undoubtedly be a moment to cherish for both Holland and the rugby community.
