Six social welfare recipients have made significant strides toward achieving financial independence by participating in the Government’s Welfare Graduation Programme. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, this initiative is designed to assist families in transitioning away from long-term welfare reliance to sustainable, income-generating activities.

In a recent funding round, the Government allocated approximately $11,000 to enable beneficiaries to establish or expand their small businesses. The grants were distributed with the support of Mr. Veremos Muria, the Director of Social Protection. Recipients are embarking on diverse ventures, including jewellery making, canteen services, flower arrangements, greenhouse nurseries, and frozen food production, all based in communities such as Nasinu, Nalidi, Delasui, Dawasamu, and Verata.

During the handover event, Mr. Muria emphasized the importance of adopting sound business practices. He encouraged recipients to separate their commercial decisions from cultural and family obligations, highlighting that discipline and strategic planning are essential for achieving long-term success.

The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the financial support, affirming that the grants would enable them to grow their businesses, reduce their dependency on welfare, and build more secure futures for their families. This ongoing programme demonstrates the Government’s commitment to empowering vulnerable households, fostering self-reliance, and creating sustainable economic opportunities, promoting a hopeful outlook for the future of these recipients and their communities.
