From Underdog to MVP: Cam Ward’s Journey to Miami

Cam Ward, a notable player throughout his college career, is set to join the Miami Hurricanes for the 2024 season after previously playing at Incarnate Word and Washington State. While many know him for his collegiate achievements, few are aware of his high school background.

Cam Ward attended Columbia High School in West Columbia, Texas, a suburb located southwest of Houston. A member of the 2020 graduating class, Ward showcased his talent during his sophomore year in 2017 and continued to excel during his junior and senior seasons. Over three seasons with the Roughnecks, he amassed 2,261 passing yards, along with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. However, his high school career is more than just these statistics.

Despite being an overlooked recruit due to the competition level at Columbia, Ward has developed physically since joining the Hurricanes, having previously been listed at 5’11”. During his time at Columbia, he had the support of a strong running game, as his teammates frequently rushed for nearly 400 yards per game.

Ward ultimately chose Incarnate Word, one of only two schools that extended him a scholarship offer. Fast forward to 2024, and Cam Ward is now a well-known athlete in college football.

His rise to prominence began during his first year at Incarnate Word when he transformed from an underrated recruit to a star. The breakout moment came in 2020 when he threw for 24 touchdowns and over 2,200 yards. The following season, he further solidified his position in the spotlight with a remarkable performance that included 4,600 passing yards and 47 touchdown passes, making him a highly sought-after quarterback in the 2022 transfer portal.

Ward’s move to Washington State came during a period of transitions for the team, but he thrived there and consistently garnered national attention for his performances. By the 2023 season, Ward had honed his skills across the board and decided to secure a final collegiate destination rather than enter the NFL Draft.

Now at Miami, Ward brings his experience and resilience, playing motivated by memories of his high school days. This determination is expected to fuel his performance as he leads the Hurricanes throughout the 2024 season.
