Youths are brimming with creativity and ideas that can transform agriculture into a modern, dynamic, and rewarding career, asserts West Sanjayan Sharma, accounts manager at Fiji Gas PTE Ltd. Speaking at the Fiji Gas Ba Farmers carnival last Saturday, Sharma emphasized the evolving nature of agriculture in Fiji, resting on the shoulders of the youth who hold the key to this transformation.
Highlighting the theme of this year’s event, “Empowering Youth in Agricultural Activities,” which resonates strongly in the current climate, Sharma noted that young people are the innovators capable of merging traditional wisdom with modern technology. This integration is essential for driving sustainable farming practices and ensuring food security for future generations.
Sharma advocated for the need to empower the youth through encouragement, mentorship, and opportunities. “Investing in training and technology will elevate farming practices to new heights,” he stated, emphasizing that at Fiji Gas, progress is viewed as attainable through partnerships.
These sentiments echo a broader narrative within Fiji’s agricultural discussions. Among recent conversations, agriculture has been recognized as vital not only for employment but also for food security and its contribution to the national economy. Challenges persist, notably an aging farmer population and a declining interest among youth in pursuing agriculture as a career. This recognition has prompted various initiatives aimed at revitalizing the sector and attracting younger generations to farming.
Government bodies and organizations, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), have been taking steps to address these issues by providing platforms, competitions like the Agri-Innovate Business Plan competition, and training programs focused on innovation. These efforts reflect a growing commitment to equip the youth with skills and resources, enabling them to navigate the complexities of modern agriculture.
In light of these initiatives, the future looks promising for both the agricultural sector and the youth in Fiji. With the right support and opportunities, young farmers are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping sustainable practices, driving innovation, and contributing positively to the nation’s economy while enhancing food security.
