A group of young boys from the Qauia Settlement in Lami is choosing the path of creativity and rhythm over negativity, embracing music as a means to earn income and make positive lifestyle choices. Known as the Qe Black Qauia crew, this collective of approximately 25 boys showcases their talent through qiri kapa, a local tradition that involves creating vibrant rhythms by drumming on tins and drums, while one member entertains the audience with dance.
The initiative was founded by Peni Tuqalo, who aimed to raise funds for school supplies and ease the financial burden on parents as the new school year neared. With the majority of the crew still in school—some as young as sixth grade—this project not only generates financial support but also offers the youth a constructive outlet for their energy.
Peni highlighted the significance of this project, stating, “In today’s society, many young people resort to stealing to earn money, but this provides a much safer and honest alternative.” Since launching in 2023, the crew has gained recognition for their performances across various towns, expanding their audience and impact.
The boys frequently travel by bus to different locations, including a recent fundraising event in the west. Through their performances, they address their educational needs while sending a powerful message about making wise life choices.
By channeling their talents into a source of income, Peni and his crew embody a spirit of honesty and creativity, inspiring their peers to consider positive alternatives to negative influences. This initiative not only enriches the lives of the boys involved, but also fosters a sense of community engagement and encourages others to pursue productive paths. Their story serves as a reminder of the power of music and creativity in bringing about positive change.
