Keresi Maya, a former representative for Naitasiri’s under-20 rugby team, has made significant strides in his rugby league career, securing a position in the Vodafone Fiji Bati extended squad for the upcoming Pacific Championships. The 24-year-old athlete hails from Vidawa Village in Bouma, Taveuni, and stands out as the only locally-based player in the 25-member squad, highlighting the strength and potential of Fiji’s domestic rugby league pathways.
Maya’s path to this milestone has been characterized by unwavering determination and hard work. Transitioning from Rugby Union to rugby league in 2020, he has shown remarkable growth in his new sport. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I like to thank the almighty for giving me this opportunity. I have really worked hard through the past months, and hearing my name being selected is something special for me.”
His rugby career commenced with the Nabua Broncos, followed by a stint with the Navy Albatross team, where he further developed his skills and showcased his on-field talent. Maya’s dedication to the sport has been instrumental in earning his place in the national squad.
The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) has also confirmed some notable absences in the Fiji Bati squad due to personal and injury-related issues. Viliame Kikau will miss the campaigns due to family commitments, while Maika Sivo has been ruled out due to injury.
Other prominent players selected for the squad include Jahream Bula from Wests Tigers, Semi Valemei from North Queensland Cowboys, Sunia Turuva of Wests Tigers, and Tui Kamikamica of Melbourne Storm, among others. The team will undergo further evaluation, and a final 20-player squad will be announced shortly as they prepare for the Pacific Championships.
The Fiji Bati is set to face off against Cook Islands Aitu on October 18 at Santos National Football Stadium, followed by a match against the Papua New Guinea Kumuls on November 1. This championship represents a significant opportunity not only for the selected players but also for the growth and recognition of Fiji’s rugby league talent on an international stage.
As Maya prepares to don the national jersey, his story serves as an inspiration of resilience and dedication, reflecting the hopes of many aspiring athletes in Fiji.
