From Small Town to Big Dreams: Cy Rae Campbell’s Inspiring College Volleyball Journey

The excitement of the first year of college is a unique experience filled with ambition and discovery. For first-year Wake Forest volleyball player Cy Rae Campbell, this new chapter is proving both challenging and rewarding as she embarks on her collegiate journey in Winston-Salem during the 2024-25 academic year.

As she approaches the midway point of her inaugural season, Cy is juggling her studies and the demanding schedule of collegiate volleyball. November, recognized as National Native American Heritage Month, holds special significance for her. “This month means a lot to me,” she said. “It’s about celebrating our past, present, and future, and it brings to light what we can advocate for as a community.”

Hailing from Olathe, Kansas, Cy was deeply rooted in her heritage as a member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. Reflecting on her upbringing, she shares how her family’s strong sense of community shaped her values. “Native Americans have always been involved in American culture,” Cy explains. “It’s important to give back and stand proud.”

Growing up surrounded by activities in a small-town atmosphere allowed Cy to flourish in sports, particularly volleyball and basketball. Eventually honing her skills at Heritage Christian Academy, she emerged as one of the top prospects in the nation, earning numerous accolades including a ranking of No. 28 nationally and a remarkable four consecutive state championships.

Upon deciding to commit to Wake Forest in July 2022, she relocated nearly 1,000 miles from home. Adapting to the East Coast’s warmer climate and the inclusive environment fostered by Wake Forest’s Pro Humanitate philosophy has been a positive experience for Cy. “The campus is pretty laid back,” she noted, appreciating the supportive community.

As the Wake Forest volleyball team navigates the second half of its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule, Cy recognizes the heightened level of competition. “There’s a difference in playing against older, more physically developed players,” she remarks, emphasizing the need for strategic analysis that goes beyond her high school experience.

Despite the challenges of balancing athletics and academics, Cy remains focused on her personal goals. She aims to maintain her academic performance while seeking opportunities to forge new friendships. With an eye towards personal development in the offseason, she recognizes that her growth as an athlete is paramount.

The positive aspects of her journey resonate as she embraces the collegiate experience, demonstrating resilience and ambition. With her passion for volleyball and a supportive community behind her, Cy Rae Campbell is poised for a successful college career both on and off the court.

This hopeful journey underscores the potential of young athletes transitioning into adulthood, and it reminds us of the strength gained from community, heritage, and perseverance.
