Answin Lata Goundar’s journey as a market vendor transcends mere financial outcomes, ultimately delivering her a life filled with purpose and fulfillment. Hailing from Qalewaqa Labasa, Goundar moved to Suva in 2012 seeking better job prospects and a brighter future.

Upon her arrival in Suva, she settled in Caubati and began her career working for a local Chinese vendor at the Suva Municipal Market. What started as an entry-level position quickly evolved into a passionate vocation. Reflecting on her earlier experiences, Goundar acknowledges her initial shyness, as well as the challenges she faced in engaging with customers. However, after amassing 14 years of experience, she attributes much of her growth to her former employer’s mentorship, which bolstered her confidence and enhanced her customer service abilities.

“Even if customers had limited money, I learned how to communicate and assist them effectively,” Goundar stated. Motivated by a desire for independence, she aspired to open her own stall while still employed at the Suva market. When the Laqere market in Nasinu opened in 2020, she seized the opportunity and successfully applied to manage her own stalls.

Currently, Goundar proudly operates four stalls at the Laqere market. She takes care to maintain the quality of her produce by sourcing fresh vegetables from Sigatoka and Baulevu, which are delivered weekly. Her dedication extends beyond providing for her family; it also fulfills her personal desire for comfort and enjoyment, a rewarding pursuit in her life.

Married to Kelvin Raj, a carpenter associated with the Hot Bread Kitchen, Goundar balances her professional life with family responsibilities, including caring for their six-year-old son, who attends Rishikul Primary School. Her narrative resonates with many female vendors across Fiji, embodying a spirit of independence and resilience. Within the vibrant atmosphere of the Laqere market, rich with lively exchanges and the aromas of fresh produce, Goundar stands as a beacon of perseverance—a testament to creating opportunities and forging her own path while significantly contributing to her family’s well-being.
