At just 27 years of age, he has invested four years of his life into teaching, fervently shaping the futures of his students. His belief that small sacrifices today can lead to significant rewards tomorrow fuels his commitment to education.
Eliki’s teaching journey began in remote schools, where he faced various challenges before transitioning to Suva Grammar School in the city. His initial role at Vaturova Koroalau High School in Cakaudrove, which marked a shift from primary to secondary education, provided him with invaluable experience that only strengthened his resolve. He reflects on overcoming hardships in rural areas, stating, “Having to settle into an interior school whereby there was no lights nor network connectivity – I had to adapt and fit in, in order to survive. But it was all worth the sacrifice.”
The influence of his mother, who has always been his unwavering support, has played a crucial role in his journey. Eliki credits her encouragement with being pivotal in his growth, saying, “I am blessed because she shows up for me no matter what.” Beyond his teaching, he continues to invest in his education, having completed a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a postgraduate diploma in international relations and diplomacy, with another postgraduate diploma in education currently underway.
Eliki’s story represents the collective spirit of educators across Fiji. He shares similarities with dedicated teachers like Leone Vulakauvaki and Josefa Mataitoga, who have both faced challenges in their respective schools but have shown remarkable resilience and commitment. These educators are vital not only in imparting knowledge but in nurturing the next generation through compassion and understanding.
Eliki believes that the effort dedicated to education can lead to transformative change in both the classroom and the wider community. He inspires others with the message that sacrifices are significant, noting, “Those small sacrifices don’t go unnoticed; they add up, and one day you’ll reap the rewards, so keep hustling.”
Thanks to the tireless work of devoted individuals like Eliki, there is a promising outlook for the future of education as they instill perseverance, tenacity, and a passion for learning in their students. Their unwavering devotion highlights education’s transformative impact, emphasizing that the journey of learning is continuous and ever-evolving.
