Demolition has commenced at the former Tucson Greyhound Park, which is set to be transformed into a youth soccer academy. The racetrack, which first opened its doors in 1944, was situated in South Tucson at the intersection of South Fourth Avenue and East 36th Street and operated dog racing until 2016. Following its closure, it briefly functioned as an off-track betting facility but was permanently shuttered in mid-2022.
The neglected site deteriorated rapidly, suffering from vandalism and damage due to fire. Now, an affiliate of the professional German soccer team Borussia Dortmund has secured a lease for the 16-acre property located at 2601 S. Third Avenue. BVB International Academy Arizona, currently running a training academy for young soccer enthusiasts at the Kino Sports Complex, will establish its own dedicated facilities in this new location.
This redevelopment represents a considerable investment in the area’s future, with South Tucson officials indicating that further details about the renewal plans will be unveiled later this year. The demolition of the old racetrack structures will pave the way for a promising new chapter at this historically significant site, highlighting a shift from its past of dog racing to a focus on nurturing the next generation of soccer talent.
This transformation not only breathes new life into the previously derelict space but also underscores a commitment to improving community resources and fostering youth development through sports.
