At 35, Salesi Balekivuya reflects on his life, having spent nearly half of it within the confines of the Naboro Prison Facility. As his sentence approaches its conclusion, Balekivuya expresses not just regret for his past actions but also a sense of transformation and renewed purpose.
Convicted of murder at just 19 years old in 2010, Balekivuya was sentenced to life imprisonment the following year. While many young individuals are charting their futures at his age, he confronted the stark realities of prison life. Hailing from Kubulau in Bua, he spent his formative years in challenging neighborhoods like Raiwaqa, Raiwai, and Jittu Estate, where negative influences led him down a criminal path.
Reflecting on his past, Balekivuya acknowledges, “Back then, we had our own plans for life. But I’ve come to believe that God already has plans for us.” He views incarceration not merely as punishment but as a vital period for introspection and personal growth. “We just have to be mindful of the choices we make,” he shares.
During his time in prison, Balekivuya rediscovered a passion for woodworking, a skill he had studied prior to his incarceration. His love for the craft blossomed at Naboro, where he collaborated with fellow inmates to enhance his abilities in carving and joinery. “I believe in life, whatever knowledge you have should be shared,” he states, emphasizing the importance of community and learning.
As he anticipates his release in August, Balekivuya is eager to embrace a new chapter in his life. He plans to return to his home village in Bua and establish a small joinery business, utilizing the skills he honed in prison to rebuild his life and contribute positively to his community.
For Salesi Balekivuya, the years spent behind bars have transformed into a pivotal turning point, leading him toward a hopeful future filled with opportunities for both personal redemption and community support. His journey highlights the potential for change and the power of hope, offering inspiration to others facing similar circumstances.
