Shanteari Weems, a Maryland day care owner, is currently residing in a halfway house in Washington, D.C., following her early release from prison. This development comes nearly three years after she shot her husband, James Weems, in a hotel room, reacting to accusations of child molestation against him.
Weems shot her husband twice in a high-profile case that captured public attention. In November 2022, she pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and carrying a pistol without a license, receiving a four-year prison sentence in February 2023—twice the recommendation from prosecutors. Now in transitional custody due to good behavior, she has the opportunity to work during the day but must return to the halfway house in the evenings until her release in December.
Having filed for divorce from her husband, who is serving a life sentence for sexual assault against children, Shanteari has also changed her name to Shanteari Young. In a previous interview, she expressed her intention to establish a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating child abuse once she completes her sentence. “I’m definitely going to make a great batch of lemonade from these lemons I’ve been dealt,” she said, indicating her desire to channel her experiences into a positive cause.
