From Pine Station to Geospatial Science: A USP Student’s Resilient Journey

KERESI Vasikali, a student at the University of the South Pacific (USP), exemplifies resilience and determination in her academic journey. Hailing from the Ra province but raised at the Nabou Pine Station between Nadi and Sigatoka, she is the youngest of a family of eight. Despite financial hardships, Vasikali’s parents continuously strived to provide for their family, fostering an environment of perseverance.

Vasikali’s initial aspiration was to become a veterinarian due to her love for animals. However, she could not bear the emotional toll of witnessing animals die, leading her to shift her focus towards subjects like accounting, economics, and computer studies, with a goal of becoming a statistician. Today, she is immersed in the study of geospatial science at USP’s Laucala Campus, drawn by the discipline’s technological appeal and career prospects.

Adjusting to university life initially posed challenges for Vasikali, but she adapted and thrived, thanks to her supportive network of friends and her family’s unwavering encouragement. She aims to graduate in 2027, with her sights set on a successful career in her chosen field, enriched by a balanced social life.

In her leisure time, KERESI enjoys reading and exploring new movies and series, underscoring her well-rounded personality. Her advice to those considering a similar path is to embrace it wholeheartedly, as it offers tremendous opportunities for both professional and personal growth.

The theme of resilience resonates not only in Vasikali’s life but also echoes in similar narratives of other USP students such as Kitti-Talei Darlene Drodrolagi, who overcame academic obstacles to achieve her Bachelor of Commerce degree, and Crystal Nivedita Shobha, who completed her degree amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. These stories collectively highlight the power of perseverance and determination in achieving educational and personal goals.

As Vasikali looks ahead, her clear vision and positive outlook paint a hopeful picture of living her best life, embracing both her career aspirations and personal growth. Her journey is a testament to pushing through challenges and the importance of familial support in reaching one’s dreams.
