Shane Victorino, affectionately known as the “Flyin’ Hawaiian,” has captivated baseball fans over his impressive 12-season career, renowned for his extraordinary diving catches. In a recent conversation on the Barstool Sports podcast “Pardon My Take,” Victorino reminisced about his childhood in Wailuku, Maui, sharing some astonishing stories from his youth, including a memorable incident where he was accidentally launched from a moving car.
Victorino recounted, “Cruising down the road in your hometown, the door falls open, little Shane just goes rolling out.” He described how he was struck by a passing vehicle, astonishingly flying 20 yards as a result. Despite facing numerous trips to the emergency room before the age of five, he maintained his aspiration to play sports.
Although he devoted much of his youth to athletics, including soccer, football, and track, Victorino disclosed that he wasn’t a natural swimmer or surfer. “I was always terrified of the ocean,” he explained, recalling his struggles with boogie boarding. Interestingly, despite being scouted by the University of Hawaii for baseball, he was initially doubted by those closest to him, including his mother, who urged him to focus on his education rather than pursue a career in the Major Leagues.
Victorino did eventually pursue baseball, opting for the diamond after being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1999. He solidified his legacy as a two-time World Series champion, All-Star, and Gold Glove winner before retiring in 2018.
Today, Victorino prioritizes his family and his work as a coach for his Flyin’ Hawaiian youth baseball team in Las Vegas. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for his achievements, stating, “How many baseball players have ever walked on this earth? I got to play 10 years in the big leagues. How lucky!”
